Immigration Physical Q&A

What happens at my immigration physical?

To begin your immigration physical, Dr. Mendoza ensures you feel comfortable and relaxed. He discusses your overall health and asks for details of your current medical problems or symptoms if you have any. Next, he performs a physical exam and some general health checks, including the following:

  • Measuring your weight and height
  • Recording your blood pressure
  • Listening to your heart and lungs
  • Examining your eyes, ears, nose, and throat
  • Feeling your internal organs

After a physical exam, you undergo screenings for specific medical problems. Certain health conditions are on the United States government’s inadmissibility lists, including infectious diseases like syphilis, tuberculosis, and mental health disorders. Dr. Mendoza checks to ensure you have none of these health concerns.

Will my immigration physical include immunizations?

Your immunizations must be current before you move. If you have immunization history records, bring them along to your immigration physical. If not, Dr. Mendoza can take a blood sample for lab analysis to identify antibodies in your body protecting you against certain diseases.

Conditions requiring immunization before moving to the US include:

  • Pertussis
  • Polio
  • Rotavirus
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Measles
  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • Mumps
  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria
  • Current influenza and influenza type B

After checking which conditions you need protection from, Dr. Mendoza can give you the appropriate immunizations or boosters.

Do I bring anything with me to my immigration physical?

When you visit Dr. Mendoza for your immigration physical, you must bring the following items:

  • Passport
  • List of current medical conditions
  • X-rays and medical records
  • List of regular medications
  • Immunization records
  • Learning disability reports
  • Positive tuberculosis test certificate

Bring any documents relating to mental or physical health conditions for which you were hospitalized, or that resulted in violent behavior.

What happens when my immigration physical is completed?

After completing your exam and tests, Dr. Mendoza fills out USCIS Form I-693 (Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record). He makes you a copy and sends the completed form to the relevant US consulate or embassy.
